Ruidera Fossil presents yet another Blow to Out of Africa

Out of AfricaThe stunning discovery was announced by press release on July 30, 2026 by CENIEH.  Virtually no US based media has covered the discovery, and no YouTube channels have produced videos on the find, outside of subspecieist.com and our sister channel – Right-Anthro on YouTube.

The partial cranium – parietal – is dated to 230,000 years.  That makes it older than Apidima 1 from Greece at 210kya and substantially older than the Israeli fossils, pelvis and crania, at Shkul, Qafzeh and Misliya roughly 150kya.

The Centro Nacional de Investigación sobre la Evolución Humana (CENIEH) has participated in a study led by Daniel García Martínez, a researcher at the Complutense University of Madrid (UCM), and published in the Journal of Human Evolution. The research analyzes a cranial fragment attributed to the genus Homo that was recovered at the Ruidera site in Ciudad Real.

Dating of the fossil, designated RVH-1, has established a minimum age of 200,000 years, placing it at a pivotal moment in European human evolution during the Middle Pleistocene. The discovery is particularly significant because human fossils from this period are exceptionally scarce in the interior of the Iberian Peninsula, a region traditionally underrepresented in the paleoanthropological record.

Establishing the chronology of RVH-1 was one of the principal challenges of the study. To address it, CENIEH geochronologists combined uranium-series dating, optically stimulated luminescence (OSL), and electron spin resonance (ESR).

The results have not only made it possible to determine the minimum age of the cranial fragment, but also to interpret its anatomical characteristics accurately, compare it with other European human fossils from the same period, and better understand the diversity of the populations that inhabited the continent during the Middle Pleistocene.

The first human fossil from the Ruidera site (Castilla-La Mancha, Spain): A partial parietal and its implications for Middle Pleistocene hominin variability in Southern Europe

SpainWe report a new Middle Pleistocene paleoanthropological locality located in southern Iberian Peninsula, Ruidera, and describe a newly discovered partial parietal bone (RVH-1). The fossil was chronologically constrained through a combination of uranium-series and optically stimulated luminescence dating methods. In particular, the human fossil–bearing breccia may be tentatively dated to between 224 ± 14 ka and 160 ± 10 ka, although an older age cannot be entirely excluded, given the inherent uncertainty in the gamma dose rate evaluation. When considering these new results together with those previously obtained on Caprinae fossil teeth from that same layer, we can reasonably propose a late (second half) Middle Pleistocene age for the Ruidera fossil locality.

They go on to discuss morphology.  Continuing:

Morphological analysis shows that RVH-1 exhibits relatively high cranial vault thickness and parietal angle compared with Iberian Middle Pleistocene samples such as the pre-neanderthals from Sima de los Huesos from Atapuerca (Spain). However, both variables fall within the broader range of variation observed across Homo heidelbergensis (both s.l. and s.s.). In this context, RVH-1 appears to be closer to specimens often described as more plesiomorphic in Europe (e.g., Ceprano) and to some African Middle Pleistocene individuals (e.g., Kabwe).

GreeceCeprano refers to the enigmatic Ceprano Man from central Italy.  The Ceprano Man cranium dated to 300kya was found by a road crew in 1994. The fossil has puzzled scientists for decades.  Some researchers believe Ceprano Man may be an early Homo sapien. Though, the cranium is thicker and has a more archaic shape than Ruidera or Apidima 1.

Amazingly, at the conclusion of the paper, they assign the specimen – albeit cautiously – to Homo sapiens.

In conclusion, RVH-1 provides a valuable addition to the Iberian and broader European fossil record. Future excavations at the Ruidera site are expected to yield additional material that may help refine its morphological and evolutionary interpretation. Given the ongoing debates surrounding the taxonomy of Middle Pleistocene hominins, we consider it most parsimonious to assign the Ruidera specimen to Homo sp. pending further investigations while noting its morphological affinities with what is the so-called H. heidelbergensis (both s.l. and s.s.). Further discoveries will be essential to better understand its position within the evolutionary landscape of the genus Homo.

Taken together – Ruidera and Apidima 1 – the fossils present a direct threat to standard Out of Africa hypothesis.
